In Psalms 1:1, God warns believers against 3 things; don't walk in the counsel of the wicked, don't stand in the way of sinners and don't settle in the settlement of the scornful. Let's look at the first of these 3 warnings.
The Exegeses Bible starts out in verse one by saying "Blithe, the man who neither walks in the counsel of the wicked."
So what does "Blithe" mean? The word Blithe in our English dictionary means to be carefree, happy and blessed. In the Hebrew, it means happiness or blessedness and comes from the root word for going straight. So the idea here is that we are blessed because we are on a straight road set before us by our Lord.
These 3 warnings therefore keep us on this straight road that God wants to bless us with.
The first warning summarized then is this - stay away from the counsel or the advice of the wicked. So we need to ask who are the wicked? The wicked are those who not only violate God's commands, but don't do or go God's way.
Mankind typically has two problems with God: one, we don't want what God wants. Two, if we do want what God, want's, we'd rather do it OUR own way, instead of His way.
Have you ever had a child that said they did what you asked, but you found out later that they did it their own way, not your way?
If you are like me, when we give instructions to our children, we want it done and done the way we said to do it.
That's why God commands us to obey and trust Him but to also know His way and do it HIS way. We can't do something a certain way if we don't know that way. Prov.3:6 in the Exegeses Bible says "Confide in Yah Veh with all your heart, lean not to your own discernment, in all your ways KNOW Him, and He straightens your paths."
We are a proud bunch of people and often don't go God's way because we are leaning on our own discernment and understanding, or on someone else's. If we are honest with ourselves, we think we (and the NOT God's Way "experts" we often listen to) know how to do it better than God. When you think about it, that really is quite a foolish thing to do.
Our God is all wise, all knowing, and the all powerful Creator of the world. Think about this. He created the world from NOTHING and made this beautiful earth and all it contains, and we won't trust Him?
With those credentials, you'd think we could trust HIM and do it HIS way, right?
Whatever the reasons, let's repent of NOT doing it Gods way and listening to those NOT God's Way folks who encourage us to do things our way or their way, instead of God's Way.
